About an hour once the glass is in hand, and $200 to $450 for most side or rear tempered panels, cleanup included. This is the fastest work in the shop, and Morris Heights is the closest to it. Door and back glass for popular models sits on the shelf here, so a car that comes in at seven is often gone by nine.

Tempered glass does not crack, it lets go all at once. One hit and the whole panel becomes a pile of blunt cubes, most of them inside the door, the rest in the seat rails, the carpet, the door pocket and the heater vents. There is nothing to repair. The window has to be replaced, the door has to be opened up, and the cavity has to be cleaned out properly or the pebbles rattle around the regulator for the next two years. We pull the door card, vacuum the shell, fit the new glass to the VIN, set it square in the run channels, and cycle the window up and down on the motor before we hand the keys back.
Rear glass is the same idea with wiring attached. The defroster grid and, on some cars, the antenna run through the panel, so those leads get reconnected and tested rather than tucked out of sight. Price lands between $200 and $450 for most tempered panels. There is no appointment to make: a driver whose window went overnight can be at the door when it opens at seven and back on the road before lunch. One of our reviewers had her window replaced and the car vacuumed out inside the hour.

A smashed door window is the classic Morris Heights walk-in, and the geography explains why. Between Undercliff Avenue, Cedar Avenue and the blocks running down toward Roberto Clemente State Park, cars park at the curb every night because the buildings have no garages under them. A door window that goes at two in the morning leaves the owner with a car full of pebbles and a plastic bag taped over the frame, and a forecast that does not care. The good news is the distance. From the bottom of the hill it is a few minutes back up to Jerome Avenue, and the glass for most sedans and small SUVs is already sitting on our shelf, so nobody has to drive around with a taped window for three days waiting on a part or a slot.
Same service, same price, other Bronx neighborhoods:
Drive over. That is exactly what the seven o'clock opening is for. Sweep the loose glass off the seat, put something over the frame if it is raining, and come down to Jerome Avenue. Door glass for common models is stocked, so most of these are finished in about an hour, cavity vacuumed and window cycled on the motor. No call ahead is needed.
More than you would guess. A single side window turns into hundreds of cubes and most of them fall straight down inside the door shell, where they sit on the regulator and the lock linkage. We take the door panel off and vacuum the cavity out, then the seat rails, the carpet and the vents. Skip that step and you hear the rattle every time you close the door.
