Long merges and bridge-approach ramps mean traffic gets up to speed in a hurry. Most houses have a driveway or a garage, so overnight curb parking is less of a story than it is in the west Bronx.

Bridge traffic does most of the damage out here. The approaches to the Throgs Neck and the Bronx-Whitestone carry heavy trucks at highway speed, and stone thrown off them at a merge hits a windshield harder than anything on a residential block ever will. Boat and trailer movement adds to that. Trailers sling gravel out of the ramp lots and marina yards, and hitches and rigging on the vehicle ahead sit at roughly windshield height. Salt air is the slow one. It works into the window channels, the trim and the pinchweld, so a windshield pulled after a decade near the water often means cleaning the frame up properly before new glass will bond. Winter is when the chips collected all year finally run out into cracks.
The honest version: this is the longest run of any of our walk-in neighborhoods. Get onto the Cross Bronx Expressway westbound and stay with it essentially the whole way across the borough, then come off at the Jerome Avenue exit. Nine to ten miles, twenty-five to thirty minutes off-peak, longer any time the Cross Bronx stacks up, so leaving early genuinely pays. Arriving on Jerome you are under the elevated 4 train between the Mount Eden Avenue and 176th Street stops, steel columns down the middle of the roadway and a tight commercial curb lane. The doors unlock at seven each morning except Sunday. Anyone who would rather not make that drive on cracked glass can have the mobile van come out to the peninsula.
