Parkway overpasses are the hazard nobody plans for. Those stone arches on the Saw Mill and the Cross County sit low, and a roof rack, a ladder or a rental box truck that wandered off the Thruway meets one of them at speed. Ordinary parkway driving does quieter damage: following close at fifty is exactly how a stone chip happens, and the Thruway and the Deegan carry construction trucks with loose gravel riding in the bed. Hills finish the job. A vehicle left on one of the steep blocks running down toward the river gets nudged by whatever rolls into it, and the cold that settles in the low ground turns a quiet star into a line across the driver's view. Winter sand and salt pit the glass a little more every season.
The route is the one you already drive: Major Deegan southbound, off at the Fordham Road exit, then south on Jerome Avenue. Seven miles, about twenty minutes when the Deegan behaves and noticeably more during the morning push. From the east side of the city, the Bronx River Parkway down to the Cross County and over to the Deegan works about as well. The last stretch runs under the elevated 4 line, and we are just south of the Mount Eden Avenue stop, so watch the columns and the narrow curb lane. Hours are 07:00 to 18:30, Monday to Saturday. Anything too far gone to drive that distance gets a van visit instead.
