Parking is the whole problem in this neighborhood, and parking is where most of our Parkchester work comes from. It usually is. Windshields and door glass for the sedans and crossovers that fill the lots around the oval stay in stock, and that is what keeps a walk-in honest. Side and rear panes take about an hour on the bench. A windshield is 60 to 90 minutes of work plus roughly another hour of cure time before it is safe to drive, longer on a cold damp day. Parkchester is a planned development built around a central oval, with interior lanes, named quadrants, and a mix of interior lots, garages and street parking that never quite adds up to the number of cars. Grant Circle sits at the west corner where Westchester Avenue, East Tremont Avenue and Metropolitan Avenue all come together, and getting through it at six in the evening takes patience and a clear right side. Unionport Road, McGraw Avenue, Purdy Street and White Plains Road carry the rest of the traffic, and the 6 train runs elevated over Westchester Avenue with stops at Parkchester, Castle Hill Avenue and Zerega Avenue. The Cross Bronx Expressway follows the north side of the neighborhood while the Bruckner runs along the south. Between circling for a spot, the ramp clearances and the shopping-cart traffic, glass here gets hit standing still as often as moving.

Low clearances and concrete are the local specialty. The Cross Bronx Expressway westbound is the entire route: get on at the north edge of the neighborhood, stay with it across the borough, and come off at the Jerome Avenue exit. Six miles or so, fifteen to twenty minutes when the Cross Bronx behaves and noticeably longer when it does not. The ramp puts you onto Jerome under the elevated 4 train, and 1747 is between the Mount Eden Avenue and 176th Street stops, with steel columns splitting the roadway and a tight commercial curb out front.
