A tech leaving Jerome Avenue can be standing in a Pelhamdale Avenue driveway before he would reach some corners of the east Bronx. The shop is still the quicker option for anyone who can bring the car, though. Nobody books a slot; the doors are unlocked at seven, Monday through Saturday, and you are seen in the order you turned up. Households out this way often run two vehicles, so dropping one off costs less than it would in the city.
Driveway work suits these streets, and it is a fair share of what we do here. The van carries the glass, the urethane, the primer and the tools, and the tech sweeps up before leaving. Back in the bay, stocked windshields and door panes are what let a walk-in finish the same morning: around an hour for tempered side or rear glass, sixty to ninety minutes for a windshield plus safe drive-away time. Wolfs Lane runs through the middle of the village past the New Haven Line station, with Fifth Avenue and the Esplanade carrying the local traffic around it. The Hutchinson River Parkway and the New England Thruway both pass close by and set the rhythm of the morning, since a good share of drivers here are on one of them by half past seven. A walkable center means short hops and constant low-speed maneuvering.

Trees come first. The canopy over these residential streets is old and heavy, and a limb or a fistful of acorns landing on a parked car takes out a windshield or a sunroof in one go. Sap and small twigs collect on the glass all summer, and the grit in them gets dragged across by the wipers until the sweep is permanently hazed. Parkway commuting supplies the next share: the Hutchinson moves quickly with very little shoulder, and stone flicked up off the car ahead lands square in your line of sight. The Hutchinson River Parkway south is the natural run: pick it up near the village, follow it down into the Bronx, then take the Cross Bronx Expressway westbound and come off at Jerome Avenue. Eleven miles and twenty-five to thirty minutes for most of the day, though the Cross Bronx can add to that with no warning. Dropping onto the Boston Post Road and cutting through the east Bronx is the backup. We are on Jerome under the elevated 4 line with the Mount Eden Avenue platform a block or two off, and the Cross Bronx crossing above the avenue just north. First cars go in at seven. Damage bad enough to make the drive unwise gets a driveway visit.

It does. Pelham is the closest of the towns we cover outside the borough, so putting a van run together for 10803 is straightforward on most days. The caveat is the one we give everybody past the city line: a driveway visit means a set arrival window, while the shop is first come, first served from seven and generally has you out sooner.
A garage is fine and often better, so long as there is room to walk right around the car with the doors open.
